That Mona Lisa is half girl, half guy! (no wonder she' s so ugly!) Da Vinci also knows that where and what the Holy Grail is, so the Last Supper must have something to do with it! A Room on Lorelei Street - Mary E. Pearson

Zoe is fed up of having to do everything for her mama - using her money from the diner to pay the bills, cleaning up, taking care of the house. She finally has enough, and leaves her mama alone, moving into her dream room on Lorelei Street. Through the move, she has to deal with crazy teachers, her grandma who refuses to look her in the eye, and of course, making rent. This book had a good message, but i found that it had too many swear words and references to sex for my taste.

The Boyfriend List

Wow... this book is really .... umm not too good or not too bad. The main character in this story, Ruby has well ... many boyfriends ... she goes to Shrink appointments .. to deal with these issues. And probably every week she loses one boyfriend.I n this hilarious book, Ruby's life is turned upside downin a matter of days. While viewing her long list of failures and downfalls, Ruby begins having panic attacks and must start visiting a therapist, Doctor Z. And Ruby's first assignment from Doctor Z is to make a list of every boy she has ever had "any kind of anything" with. In doing so, Ruby learns to cope with her emotions and comes to the realization that, despite all of the problems and obstacles she may and will face, life goes on.

With an extremely suspenseful plot full of twists and surprises, this makes the perfect story for any high school girl trying to escape the drama of everyday life. It gives many scenarios that people face on a regular basis, and, through the wise words of Doctor Z, helps you learn how to deal with these problems.

The main conflicts in this story are person verus person and person versus society. Ruby faces criticism from her peers and even from her close friends. She also must learn to deal with the impact that society has on the decisions that she must make every day...

The Other Ones - Jean Thesman

A girl has magical powers, but does her best to shield them from the world, and from herself. But when these powers become the difference between life and death for some of her friends, it is finally time to choose whether she will embrace her powers, or cast them to the wind. I liked this book - it had a different twist on the old story of magic, and allows your mind to wander.

Mood Indigo

This book was really good. From the beginning to the end the book was full of suspense. Even the title of the book is unique and mystifying. The title and the genre of the book are the two things that mad me interested in the book. The book starts of by unfolding the main character’s life who in this case is Honoria Barlow. Honoria is a married woman who has an occupation of film script doctor. The mystery in the book that needs to be resolved is that Chip’s (the son of Honoria's best friend who is dead now) girl friend Dee Dee is dead and the media releases reports saying that Dee Dee committed suicide. However Chip believes that it is a murder and he ask Honoria to go and ask Dee’s friends, family and neighbors about Dee and what they actually think happened to Dee. Honoria do go and ask some of Dee’s friends and for everyone’s surprise all of her friends that Honoria has talked say that Dee is not a kind of girl that will commit suicide and all of her friends say at least something opposite of what some of the other friends said. That is all I can say! Read the book to find out what happens. This book is full of suspense. The book is a great book, and I would definitely recommend it to many other teens to read it and especially to teens that love mystery, suspense genres and to teens that wants to be a detective or a mystery author. After I started reading the book I couldn’t put it down without finishing it.

The author wrote in a way that she knows it will attract mystery lovers. I really enjoyed reading the book.

The Sword Of Shannara by Terry Brooks

The Sword Of Shannara is a 726 page book but it's good! It was just like Lord Of The Rings but not as boring and shorter. Basically a place in the South called Shady Vale is where two brothers live quite happily until a tall, mysterious traveler named Allanon intrudes. The two brothers aren't exactly brothers by blood but they are both in the Ohmsford family. The brothers' names are Flick and Shea. Shea was adopted at the age of 3 when his mother died. Shea is half-human and half-eleven and the only one of his type in Shady Vale. Allanon comes and warns him that a distinct blood line determines that he is the rightful heir to the fabled Sword of Shannara. Allanon told him that he is part of the bloodline of Jerle Shannara, a great eleven king who destroyed the evil threatning the whole world and that the evil that Jerle Shannara destroyed is back and it is up to Shea to take the Sword of Shannara up against the evil Warlock Lord. The Warlock Lord has been tracking down all the elves in Jerle Shannara's bloodline and killing them but he never considered that there may be a half-human half-elfin bearer. Now Shea must run away and seek the shelter of the Anar forests with his brother and eventually regain the sword of shannara and defeat the Warlock Lord!

Wow I typed a lot...Well this book is 726 pages long! It is a compelling adventure about 7 people going up against something evil that threatning the whole world, will they survive their quest and will Shea truly destroy the Warlock Lord forever? You have to read it to find out! Muhahahaha!

I love the Angus Glen Library. Really I do. From the very start, it's modernized approach to knowledge surprised and thrilled me. For one, the "shhh-we're in a library" rule doesn't apply here an there's an entire department dedicated to teens. Although these changes have been made to appeal more to the youth (me included, we were starting to move away from libraries) there seem to have been quite a few things lost in the transition.

Vogue and various fashion magazines are really fun and full of advice for the everyday life, but I can get these almost anywhere. I don't go to the library to read something I can access anywhere else. Moreover, scholarly journals which I enjoy occasionally (but are far too expensive for me to subscribe to, especially when I'm not interested in every issue) are hard for me to even FIND in the library.

There's a balance that needs to be struck between the appeal to our interests and our need to BUILD interests. I might be going overboard, but when was the last time I really heard advertising for a library debate group? a discussion group? an actual book club? (although I am part of the online one) Probably not the most popular options for todays youth, but I think that they underestimate us sometimes. We are intelligent and we do have priorities apart from boys, make up, fashion, and ourselves. (Oh God I make us sound shallow) (and Yeah...I'm a debater...can you tell?)

*I really hope I don't sound like a radical anti-fun kinda gal right about now*

One thing that I do congratulate the Teen department about is their mentioning NaNoWriMo!! I've been a reader of the nano works for a long time, and am planning to participate this year. The only problem is that it's much more fun to do this sort of thing as a group (be it internet or real life) and I'm quite sad that we don't have this sort of collective activity at the library...it's one reason i chose to apply to join TAG. Unfortunately, my application was lost and now I have to reapply, but both of my contact numbers were also lost with the previous application. If any of you bloggers haven't heard of NaNoWriMo, you're missing out on a crazy idea (whether you choose to experience it or not), go to www.nanowrimo.org and check it out.

Hoping to apply again soon,

This Book is great!!! sorry im kinda new at this

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

N'cha Everyone!!! (N'cha is my made up way of saying hello)

As you may have guessed this is my first time doing this, which I think is pretty cool :D So before I tell you about this wonderful book called Twilight let me first tell you a little about myself. As you may have guessed my favourite colour is purple as well as blue. But I seem to like writing in purple better then blue for some reason. And by my colour of choice you probably guessed I'm a girl. Anywho....I love to read, any type of books intrest me, mostly romance or fantasy, but I'm not picky, I'll read anything :P Also I don't like abandoning books because I feel that I've left something unfinished and I just don't like that feeling very much. Also I might start reading a book and then in the beginning it would be boring but I still keep reading so i give the book a chance and mostly it never dissapoints me because it gets fairly intresting :D Ok so enough about me and the way I like to read now it's Twilight's time to shine. :D

Twilight...oops forgot to underline :P OK... so starting again. Twilight is about a girl named Isabella, but she prefers the name Bella. So Bella lived in Pheonix, which is in the United States, just so you know, and she decides to move to the town of Forks. Forks is a town that hardly ever stops rainning, or snowing which by the way Bella hates. But you may ask if she hates the town of Forks then why would she move there? Well that's for me to know and for you to find out...muw ha ha ha <---Evil laughter if you didn't catch that. Anyways, well as you might of guessed there has to be some kind of romance in the book, there always is, well there is. See Bella meets a guy named Edward, Edward Cullen to be exact. And how to describe Edward, hmmm...well he is very pale, he has dark circles under his eyes, he wears designer clothes, he's quite handsome, he's eyes change colour along with his mood, and his eyes can be very hypnotizing....hmmm...did I leave anything out? I don't think so. So anyways, as you might of guessed Edward is a vampire! Cool, huh? And in this book all that you know about Vampires should be earsed!!! Because Stephenie Meyer has put in some of her own rules about vampires! Well Edward and Bella seem to be made for each other, and Edward's family of vampires are well, quite happy for Edward except for Rosaline. Who's Rosaline, you might ask? Well same thing, if you read the book, all will be revealed!!! Anywho....something bad, unexpected even, happens that might just cause Edward's happiness to be shattered and Bella's world to be destroyed!
So I think that's a pretty good description of the book, without, you know giving away anything... So ya, very intresting, you should read it! Trust me, it's very good. Try to comment!! I want to know how people feel about my blogs. Don't hold back on me.
More Later,
K.

Has anyone heard of this blog?

It is in the Toronto area. Basically, you put up something you need and people respond. You can also put up something to share.

This site started because a young man needed to borrow a tall ladder for a project and knew someone would have one that he could borrow.

It has helped many people without any cash changing hands.

Great idea!

Have you heard of any other creative uses of blog?

A red paper clip gets a house

This young man was very creative. He traded a red paper clip on his blog, for one thing and then another. A year later, he has a house as a result and to think it all started from a paper clip.

Myspace

This morning's news had another piece about young people being targeted on my space.com. Adults were arrested as a result.

I used myspace for a course I was taking but I had very definite limitations on what could be done on the blog.

This blog is only limited to library customers and is moderated.

How safe do you feel blogging on other blog pages?

Can you keep a secret?

Can you keep a secret?
Author: Sandra Glover

This was a short enough read, just to start off my summer. Once I started reading the book, I wanted to keep reading... since the author had left a part of the story a mystery. but eventually, you find out. Not because the author tells you, though, but rather the characters are also finding out and talking about the subject. It is about a baby being left, in a box, on the steps of a hospital one night, and was the cover story of every newspaper, the top news story, and what everyone talked about at school. The main characters name is Karen, who has two best friends- Paula and Shaheen. Shortly after Zoe came along. Zoe was known for her lying. she lied about everything- big or small. Even to her best friends! She can't keep secrets either,so she isnt trusted. One day, Zoe tells Karen a secret. A BIG one.

Andrea's Pick of the Month - Twilight

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
When 17-year-old Bella moves to the dreary, rainy town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, she figures she’s doomed to boredom until she meets the gorgeous and enigmatic Edward Cullens. Edward is dark and mysterious, and with good reason—he’s a vampire. Despite the dangers, Edward and Bella can’t contain their growing attachment.

As a former goth, I admit a certain bias for all things vampire, so I couldn't help getting "sucked" into this novel! Despite the book’s narrative weaknesses—the book is a little plodding in parts, the dialogue seems forced in places and the novel’s climax, though suspenseful, seems a bit rushed—Twilight did draw me in with the totally convincing depiction of Bella’s growing attraction to Edward. The details of Edward’s past and the vampire lore are original and interesting, and the author creates great atmosphere in both the description of the grey, gloomy pacific town and Bella’s mental landscape. It may not be the greatest book ever written but it is a fun addictive read that’s perfect to curl up with on a rainy summer day.
Andrea's Rating: ♥♥♥.5/5

In The Clique series, Massie Block and her three friends Alicia, Kristen, and Dylan make up The Pretty Committee, the most popular clique at their school, Octavian Country Day (OCD). Book #2 - Best Friends for Never

Book #3 - Revenge of the Wannabees

Book #5 - Invasion of the Boy Snatchers

Alicia's cousin Nina from Spain arrives and starts screwing up all of the girls relationships, mostly Massie with Derrington, and Claire with Cam. All the girls must now work together to send Nina right back to where she came from.

Book #6 - The Pretty Committee Strikes Back

Kristen must deal with a haircut that leaves her looking like a man, and Claire awaits her first kiss from Cam, now that she has everything else that she wants, and is an official member of The Pretty Committee.

While these books aren't neccessarily eduactional, they are quite humourous, and addictive!! Once you read one, you'll be desperate to read more. I love them!! Lisi Harrison really makes you feel like you are following the girls around, and that you are part of their dillemmas.

Just Joking

This hilarious book written by Andy Griffiths dictates the humorous and fun filled life of a young boy named Andy (kinda ironic huh?:)). This boy plays unthinkable pranks, and ends up in tight situatioins where he must fend for himself. No body believes his stories and classifies them as excuses, though when he tries to do something good, his plan is always foiled.

The Book Thief- Markus Zusak

This may be my only 10 this season (only because it is so fresh and wonderfully written). Simply put, of all the stories to be written about the holocaust, this one takes the bait. Usually they follow the same line and point of view, that of a Jewish prisoner or victim. This one is told from Death's point of view. It is beautiful in it's simplicity. It mostly concentrates on Liesel, a girl in a foster home (who is loved dearly by her parents, although her mother reinforces rules with a good spanking and some prolific swearing) and her walk as a German girl at the time. This review hardly does this book justice. If you cannot stand other Holocaust fiction (because it can become repetitive, seem whiny, long, and unoriginal) then this is most certainly your read. Strikingly simple, Zusak weaves a spell without having to rely on building up suspense by withholding information. A riveting tale, un-paralleled this season.

"I've seen so many young men
over the years who they're
running at other young men.
They are not.
They're running at me" (Zusak, 174)

"'Saukerl,' she laughed, and as she held up her hand, she knew completely that he was simultaneously calling her a Saumensch. I think that's as close to love as eleven-year-olds can get." (Zusak, 144)

At school, her brother seemed so happy in the Unity Service charity group. As she tries to join the group for her brother's memory, she notices that something isn't right. Gentlehands - M.E. Kerr

Buddy's parents turn against him when he starts dating the rich Skye Pennington, who everybody thinks is wrong for him. He goes to his grandfather for help, even though he doesn't know very much about him, as his mother would never let him visit. As he gets tangled up in the lives of Skye and his grandfather, he discovers a secret that will change his life forever. The events of the holocaust are cleverly weaved into the story, without being the main focus. An all around great book, definately reccommended.

Oprah Winfrey-Judith Janda Presnall

Well, this is a biography of Oprah Winfrey. What can you say about a biography?

There is a lot I'm sure most of you didn't know about Oprah. I guess I especially enjoyed this biography because it really shined a light on Oprah's good sides, and it was very inspirational. I also like that it was broken up with pictures and lots of quotes, and wasn't to difficult to read. It was more short and sweet.

A good book.

Life In The Fat Lane-Cherie Bennett

We've all seen it, we've all heard it, and most of us have probably done it, either intentionally or not but one way or another, we have poked fun or cricized someone's weight.
The media today puts a surreal amount of pressure on society to look, act and think a certain way and its all very convincing. But the media is especially putting a huge amount of pressure, probably the most on teenage girls, who are the easiest to change and put self-doubt into, because they are still finding a sense of self. Many books are out there about obesity and depression, but none so blunt, and close to home as Cherie Bennett wrote.

Lara is the skinniest, most beautiful girl at her school, and the proud recipient of many first place beauty pagaents. When she starts taking some medication for her allergies though, she starts to gain weight...ALOT. And no diet she gets put on does anything. And when she blimps up to outrageous numbers, she starts to feel like she is dissapointing everyone.

I can't tell anymore about the story except that i have never read anything molre insightful, and you walk a full 260 pages in Lara's shoes, and when you switch back, i hope you were as moved, and all the more wiser to others sensitivities and accepting that there are many shapes and sizes, and no ONE is better or superior to others.

I hope this book both satisfies your entertainment level reading, as well as your emotional, intellectual side, because i believe this book has a lot of room for interpretation, and you should definately READ BETWEEN the lines with this book.

Enjoy!

Princess Diaries: VI: Princess In Training -Meg Cabot

The sixth book in the Princess Diaries series (if I may say so, quite an excellent series, not just some surface-level teen series, although it does have the regular teen stuff, and these books are like a teen bible, if half the information is real, and I'm babbling so BACK ON TRACK.)

Anyways, this book continues with Mia Thermopolis, the recently-discovered princess of Genovia, a small European country, living in New York, starting the grade ten school year at lower New York Albert Einstein High School, where she also attended grade 9. Only this year, she is without her boyfriend, Michael, who just happens to be her best friend's older brother. Michael is now in first year university in upper New York State, where Mia can basically only see him on weekends. And now Mia is worried that all her boyfriend thinks about is when she will be ready to "Do It", thanks to Lana (only THE most popular girl in the school) starting this wonderful rumor.

And now that Mia has dumped thousands of foreign snails in Genovia's ocean and Genovia's royal family is constantly in they eye of the press (and not in a good way), both Grandmere (the queen) and Lilly (Mia's best friend) are pushing her to run for student council president. Well, its more like Lilly puts her in the running-only against Lana.

This book is all about Mia's campaign and pre-election time, worrying about weither or not Michael is going to break up with her because of her lack of...Doing It skills..., her decreasing English mark, and mostly, being princess of a country she put in jepordy. ( sorry for my lack of spelling skills)

This book is definately no dissapointment, as many sequels are. And this book has a very strong underlying message pulsing thruought the whole story about finding one's self, and about being the best you can be, and always staying true to who you are, when you discover just who that may be.

All i can say is Meg Cabot once again didnt dissapoint and if you are looking for a good, scratch that, incredible!! book, read the whole series!

Silver Eyes- Nicole Luiken

I feel bad for publishing so many posts in a row, but really when a sequel to an excellent novel is this good...(there are exceptions to be made in my internet etiquette). This novel is consistent with the style and plot of it's predecessor and (if you enjoyed the last one) will not disappoint. I have contacted Nicole and it turns out booksales weren't high enough to have a third come out. I blame this on the lack of advertising (none actuall) because i stumbled on the first book by accident as well. I would really *love* to read a third (you have no idea) so if you could just read it and maybe send her a good review, perhaps she'd be persuaded to write an e-book or some other alternative.

SCRATCH THAT. I've just checked her site! she's going to be writing Angel Eyes (does a happy dance) I love you all. This blog has GOT to be good luck!.

Violet Eyes- Nicole Luiken

I love this book. I just finished the sequel last night and really I cannot recommend a better book. Although it has enough real romance to keep a girl going, the society itself with advanced human races and live-in museums is so realistically depicted that you can wonder whether it is happening at this moment. Perhaps it is because it is by a female author (I've actually emailed her a few times- she's a wonderful advice giver as well) that you feel it on a very personal level. The story opens like any other novel- with the character but does not dive into the featured society. Instead it allows for a certain period of normality before the 'cookie crumbles'. It's always been my favourite (don't worry there aren't any hardcore romantic scenes that i should be warning about) and I hope someone else will give it a chance.

9/10 (my only 9 so far :))

Animal Farm- George Orwell

I've just finished re-reading this book, and find it just as wonderful as the last time. (insert smile) This is one of the few books that can be read either for amusment, or for want of deeper contemplation. It has it's comical moments (the war between the animals and the farmer) as well as it's darker implications (the pigs at the end could not be differentiated from those faces of the other humans). On the whole, i enjoyed the example of how great media influence is. This novel certainly still implies today (with North Korea, where even starving citizens believe they are better off than the rest of the world due to media propaganda) and is definately worth the read. (Thanks to Catherine's advice: Mix-up the sort of novels you read consecutively. 3 novels in a row is bound to leave you feeling icky) Although I've been on a Sci-fi splurge lately, I hope to mix it up a bit soon.

1984- George Orwell

Heralded as one of Sci-fi's mst convincing novels, 1984 takes the journey through a society where the past is rewritten daily and those who remember something else can be convinced otherwise. Although i enjoyed Animal Farm much more, 1984 was truly unique. For one, the society allows Winston to feel the truth and propriety of the way it runs (much like the native savage in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley) before they do away with him. It is such strange (almost unbelieveable) acceptance and true love for the leader of the society he had previously tried to destroy that horrifies the leader as he gets shot, within moments of his sudden revelation. If I were to label Winston as a tragic hero, his fear would be his hubris. A good read, if you do not mind feeling a little disomforted afterwards.
