I read a book called Can't Get There From Here, by Todd Strasser.It talks about a girl lives on the streets of New York City, her name is Maybe. She and here friends live on the streets without a family except each other. Abused, cold, hungry and forgottened, they stuggle. When days past, friends die of stangling, exposure, drug abuse, liver failure and abuse. A new girl, Tears, joins them and as friends go, they soon are the last one there. They meet a kind librarian, Anthony and he helps them find a home. There I will leave you in the shoes of a homeless child in the harsh story of Maybe.
