Question

How do we find out who wins the draw every time?

Jahanara - princess of princesses

This book was about the enclosed yet eventful life of the emperor to be's first out of many daughters. In the time of Jahanara ( the emperors daughter, who is also known as princess of princesses) royalty is kept away from civilization, yet rivalry amoung the family is vivid. The emperors four wives all follow their own religion, and are being maipulated by the prior queen, who is said to be cursed. Jahanara is having problems understanding the "family war", and why her brother is taking after the prior queen "Nur Mahal" who had kidnapped him. She is unsure of who to trust and how to act, but she is certain that her mother will always support her choices in the matter.(Even though princesses' opinions were not considered crucial in the story)

Crank

Hey!
This book is by Ellen Hopkins. This is fiction, but Miss Hopkins' daughter has been touched this monster..crank, a drug. The story talks about a girl, Kristina. She had a perfect life...until she uses Crank. She goes visit her dad and meets Adam. Love at first sight. They make out in public a millions times. But the trip is over. Still on crank is Bree, the fearless, no more, is Kristina. Back home. Sadly, she leaves Adam. At home, crank gets her 2 boyfriends (drugs). One truly loves her. As Bree, a nickname, (fearless) she meets another boy, whose also does drugs. The 2nd one is to quick...it's too late.......
I thought this book teaches alot about too early boyfriends. It would be a better book if there wasn't so much detail.

girlology: a girl's guide to stuff that matters

this book is by Melisa Holmes (an ob-gyn) and Trish Hutchinson (a pediatrcian). it is a guide for teen girls to friendships, parents, sex, relationship, media influence, values, and decision making. some people might think books like these are preachy and dull, but this one is different. and most of all, it talks about girl power!

teen people celebrity style guide

i love this book! it's packed with quizzes, and has 6 chapters. and has like a million photos of celebs! learn how to get good skin, what colours are for you, steal the stars' looks, get soft shiny hair, get rid of zits, feel confident, give yourself facials, make your own skin products and lip balm, and even host your own spa party with home made products! it even adresses some beauty problems you may have, and how to fix them (no plastic sugery or anything) ! theres so much more, too, and that's why i love it so much!

Luck! How to get it and how to keep it!

This is a book where there is a lot of stuff about your number, horoscope sign and other astrogolical stuff. One thing someone could try is write down your birthdate, doesn't matter what order, after writing them down add all the numbers together until you end up with only one digit left. Ex. 11.03.1991=1+1+0+3+1+9+9+1=25=2+5=7
in this case the number is 7
"This number is important; it comes from your birthdate, so as with astrology it should relflect some fairly central things about your charcter. "

I am number 7, and in the book there is some characters about number seven which does match to my character.

If you want me to type up what the book says about your number just leave a post and i will.

First Daughter

Hello!
I read a book called First Daughter, by Christa Roberts-based on a major motion picture.(2004)
Sam (Samantha) wants to be normal.....Why? Because she's the president's daughter. Now, she gets a chance to be normal....She's going to college. But not so normal..with the bullet-proof window in her dorm and her bodyguards. (hard to hide) Then she meets the perfect guy! James. Now, she's happy that someone really likes her for who she is on the inside instead of the president's daughter. Or does he? On that horrible night that she figures out who he really is........
I thought it was good dreamy princess book!

The Summer

Hey guys, i was just wondering what everybody did in the summer to keep busy. I know that since my parents are at work during the day, i usually end up on the couch watching TV - there's only so many walks you can take the dog on. Does anybody have any ideas on how to keep busy, i mean besides writing in the blog, of course.

Cheating Lessons - Nan Willard Cappo

Bernadette, a major over-achiever in school, is one of the five members of the Wickham Wizards, her school's team competeing in the State Championship Quiz Bowl against Pinehurst, a private school full of know-it-alls. Being a public school, Wickham is shocked to have beat Pinehurst's scores in a state test. But Bernadette is shocked, and believes that somebody cheated to get them into the competition. She must now work to find out who it is, and see if they are cheating still. I kinda liked this book, but i'm not a huge fan of academic books, i find them dull. an academic competition isn't my idea of a good time, but everybody is different. Overall, I'd give it a 4/5.

Teen People- September 2006

whenever i get a new magazine, i read the whole thing in one night. its too tempting! my dad got it from our mailbox and put it on my desk. when i got home, all i did was read it.whole night. even kinda in bed. good thing i showered before that! or i would probably have skipped showereing!
this was (i think) the biggest teen people issue i have ever read. in total, it was 234 pages in total! there were two covers, and the flip side was a hollywood special. there was stuff about the new laguna beach cast(season 3 starts aug. 16), stuff about lots of different stars, and "the power list". its the top ten celebrities with the best movie roles for 2006. everything else was almost all about back to school. theres a little article about zac efron and teen choice awards 06. keri russel gets glam for her covergirl commercial, and a fashion diary from... paris hilton! the john tucker must die cast (girls) model the top ten fall fashion essentials, and nelly furtado models 4 cool fall makeup looks. whether you want it to be fresh, punk, sexy, or mod. all this stuff about what celebs like what jeans, and 8 girls who lived through katrina get amazing back to school makeovers! theres a back to school beauty countdown, like what to do when theres how many days/ weeks left of summer to look good and make a good first impression. teen talk about their virginity. 4 tp life lessons-- hot to make the team, throw a great end of summer party, make an great 1st impression, and take your best school picture. the usuals: embarrassing stories, confessions, and a will ferrell flashback.

this is probably the issue i would refer to every year for back to school, and just for the fun of it!

We have received a whole bunch of new books, today at Angus Glen, if you are looking for good reads.

THe music trivia was not supposed to be too hard but i have had only one of you try.

Catherine

P.S. I am just preparing this week's trivia. Get ready.

Just Like Heaven (2005)

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Jon Heder

Summary: Elizabeth is a serious hard worker, who loves her job at the hospital. But when she gets in a car accident, and is put into a coma for three months, her spirit is freed from her body. She returns to her apartment, only to find that David, the guy temporarily renting the place, has invaded. She desperately tries to remember her past, which is all a distant memory, and with the help of David, finds the only thing she was ever missing in her life.

Verdict: I liked this movie!! To be perfectly honest, i wasn't too excited to see this film, but it turned out to be a really cute movie. I would reccommend getting out and seeing it. :-)

The Perfect Man (2005)

This movie, starring Hilary Duff and Heather Locklear, is one that i'm sure everybody has heard of. I just saw it yesterday, and i LOVED it!! i personally love movies which contain a little fluff, especially ones with Hilary Duff in them, and this one was pretty cool, not to mention that Hilary's wardrobe was AWESOME in the film. Okay, so the movie is about a girl named Holly who is sick of moving every time her mother is dumped by another loser boyfriend. To boost her mom's confidence, she creates the perfect man, with the help of her friends Adam, Amy, and Amy's uncle Ben. But when her mom's interest increases, she finds herself resorting to desperate measures to keep this guy sounding legit. it's a really good movie, not to mention it was partially filmed in Toronto, and all my fellow fluff-lovers will, well, love it!!

Your preferred reading time

This is a general question (out of my usual curiousity) :

What time of day/week do you usually read??

Personally, I'll read at any time- if i find a good book, I won't put it down until I've finished (the last time Harry Potter came out, i went to midnight madness and finished it at around 4:00 am that same morning) which is something my parents certainly aren't happy about (but what can they do? I've been collecting flashlights and booklights since they were invented). I'll often read a half-an-hour before bed, as alot of the people i know do. Some younger children prefer this because it's becomes habit, with bedtime stories from their baby-days but I'm not really sure if this changes as people get older.

Do you have a particular time of day, or day or the week that you do most of your reading on??

Miss Anne Thropic
Isabelle

In this book, there are some teenage daughters who talk about the kinds of relationships they had with their mom. They talk about how they treated their mother on certain situations, how thier mom treated them, what happened at school. This book has some valuable lessons that all teens could learn from these real life experiences. Some stories were sad, i feel sorry for those mothers that trust their daughters so much, give everything that the daughter asks and they get betrayed. In one of the stories the mother said she will pay her daughter if the daughter gets A or B on her report card, $100 for A, $50 for B.

The Best Ghost Stories Ever

In this book there are variety of different ghostly kind stories written by different authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bram Stoker, Henry James. One of the stories that i read is titled "A Ghost Story" by Jerome K. Jerome. In this story a guy meets a person that he thought he knew very well and he has not seen this person for years. At the place where they met the guy shaked hands with the person that he seen after years. The next morning the guy finds out from his friend that the guy who he thought was and talking has died six months ago. For the guy's suprise, he thought that he might have mistaken talked to a different man, but however when the guy was talking to that person as he is the person they have met years ago, the person's replies had never once suggested that the guy has talken to a different man. Ghostly!!

WHO ARE YOU?-The Big Book of Personality TESTS by Salvatore V.Didato, Ph.D.

This is a book where there is a 100 number of tests you in the following categories: The Real You, In the Mood For love, A Happy Home, Social Senses, On the Job, The Smell of Success, Thought in ACtion, Your Emotional Wellness. A lot of the test gave some true results for me. Here is a test from the Smell of Success section.
Do You Use the Hidden Power of your Wardrobe?

How much do you rely on what you wear to prompt success in the things you do? To find out how clothes-conscious you are, take the following quiz.

Test
1. Your decision about what to wear is influenced by whom you expect to encounter during the day.
a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree
2. You get a psychological lift when you buy clothes.
a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree

a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree
4. You would feel self-conscious if you dressed inappropriately for some occasion.
a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree

a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree

a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree
10. You would feel uncomfortable if you met someone at a party who was wearing the same outfits as you.

a. Disagree b. Agree c. Strongly agree

Scoring
For each "a" response give youself 1 point, for "b" response give yourself 2 points, for each "c" give yourself 3 points.
If you get alltogether:
0-18 points- You tend to minimize the impact yor clothes might have on you or those you meet. Maybe you rely too much on your strongest traits (such as intelligence or your or your sense of humor) and don't pay enough attention to your appearance. Your clothing can add to your success. Try to make more of an effort to dress smartly lest you become lax about your impact on others.
19-24 points- You fall in the mid-range. You pay enough attention to your appearance as is neccessary to be presentable, but you don't spend a lot of time updating your wardrobe. You conform to changing styles, but usually only after they become fairly well-established.
25 points or more- You have a high clothes-consciousness, relying on your wardrobe to enhance your social image. You fell sensitive being out of style but look forward to compliments when you know you look good. Heed this caution: Though you have high fashion awareness (a generally positive trait) be careful not to depend too much on your attire to succeed with others. In the final showdown, they will judge you by your character more than anything else. Mo matter what your score on the quiz, be aware of the golden rule of dress: Clothe yourself to how you want to be treated.

Media

Hey!! I have written an essay on media last year, i am going to post it on the blog. i would like the other bloggers to post comments about what i have written in the essay. Thanks.
Argumentative Essay
Media. What is it? According to Malcolm X it is “The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” According to Corazon Aquino The media's power is frail. Without the people's support, it can be shut off with the ease of turning a light switch.
” According to Sutharmina’s perspective media is a dreamland that shows our dreams in a television set. It is a mind controller of thoughts, emotion, and feelings that should be in our head. It is a liars land, and thinks that people who see the media are fools, and it is true for most of us; because we believe what we see, with no doubts in our head.
Teenagers are continuing to get more and more fooled by the media. The media uses the illusory image method to make teenagers believe things that are not even true. Another technique that is often used in media, to catch teenagers’ attention is the bending, canting, and appeasement technique. Bending, canting and appeasement technique is used to catch attention of viewers by making the models pose in a sexual pose. One other thing that is used by the media is clowning and exaggeration. Clowning and exaggeration in media is when male models, or singers are portrayed as serious, and when female models are portrayed as silly, childish, or even foolish. Media has a negative impact on teenagers by lowering the teenagers’ self-esteem and by changing their view on things.

The media takes advantages of the bending, canting, and appeasement method to easily catch the attention of the entire generation of teenagers. To begin, models pose in a way and they see the viewer is something that is found attractive by teenagers. The models’ poses are always uncomfortable for them, but however that is what attracts the present generation of teenagers. For example, the model in the Design Essentials advertisement is bending her body to show off what her blouse is supposed to be hiding. The Design Essentials advertisement makes the teenagers to see the advertisement more and more closely by making the model to show what her blouse is hiding. This pose and these kinds of poses are always found “hot” or “sexy” by the teenagers. The pose in the advertisement makes the teenagers to think that they also should be showing what their clothing should be hiding; to do so, some teenagers go against their religion and or their parents because of what the media is portraying of teenagers. Also a music video titled “I Gotta Make it” by Trey Songz has women, that are, wearing a very little clothing and standing in an “attractive” way that they think will be a magnet for the opposite sex. This music video has a negative influence on teenagers; because, it is portraying females as if they have to be wearing a little clothing and should do actions that will be “gorgeous” to the opposite sex. In, other words the music video is altogether telling that females are just there in the world to show of their skin to the world and also only to attract other human beings. The music video portrays females as if they are not worth for anything except for the reasons that were listed above. In addition, another video that is also using females to show the females’ figures and curves is the music titled “Drop it like its Hot”. In this music video, there are many women in it who are just there to show us a closer view of their curves, and figures. These women are used as object of desires; the women don’t have a main part in music video such as singing, they are just there so that the men could look at them. Another, reason why there are a lot of women showing their skin is to catch the attention of teenagers. The media thinks that teenagers only look for anything that has to do with “sexy”, or hot, and or taking of closthing. Is that a right point of view of the teenager? That will be decided by the majority of the teenagers. Also, one more negative influence that the music video has is that all the males are after cloth stripping girls. Following this the females that watches the music video will immediately have a thought created in their mind saying that “males go after girls who are a striper, and if a girl doesn’t show of her skin, than the girl is worth nothing to a men. Furthermore, another model in a magazine advertisement for Jasmine Herbal Essences is naked. No matter what else is in the advertisement such as the beautiful jasmines; what first grabs the attention of teenagers is that the model is naked. This advertisement also sends a message to teenagers saying that they should be always trying to show-of their skin as much as possible especially for females since that is what grabs the attention of the opposite sex. One another advertisement has a model that is posing in a way that they know it will attract teenagers. The model in the advertisement is bending her middle body from her chest to hip, and also bending one of her feet. The smile on the model’s face is appealing. This advertisement makes teenagers to think that you always should be bending some part of your body (recommending chest mostly) to be found sexy and or hot by someone. The media makes the teenagers to think that they all should look “sexy’ and “hot” at all times. To finish of teenagers should start to see the real reasons behind media, and not only is what appealing and attractive to their eyes, since there is more to a book than the front cover.
The illusory image technique in media easily fools teenagers. All the teenagers that look at different forms of media believe whatever is there; they don’t tend to use their brain for clarifications. An advertisement that uses the illusory image a lot is the advertisement for Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer. The model’s hair in the advertisement has some words written on it which are “soft, moisturized, beautiful, sexy, and healthy.” This advertisement fools teenagers to believe that if they use this hair product that they are selling than they will have hair that is healthy, soft, moisturized, beautiful and sexy. This advertisement affects the way that the teenagers think that their hair should be. The teenagers will quickly change their view on hair because the media is telling them to, and that is found common or “cool”. However again teenagers are peer-pressured to change they beliefs. Another advertisement that uses the illusory image technique is the advertisement for Neutrogena hair products. The model in the advertisement has very shiny hair. This advertisement also fools teenagers into believing that if they use all the Neutrogena hair products then they will have sun shining hair as the model in the advertisement. However the fooled teenagers should be aware that the reason behind the shine in the hair is the extra light that is shooting on the model’s hair. This advertisement will lower teenagers’ self-esteem because the teenagers will try all the hair products that Neutrogena selling and always their hair won’t get shiny as the models in the advertisement. This will make teenagers to think that their hair is no good for anything and especially at this kind of times teenager tend to compare themselves with others and which will make them think low of themselves even more. The next advertisements that I have as an example is all the ten advertisements. All the ten advertisements have models that are slim. All these advertisements make teenagers to think that if they use any of the hair products the companies are selling then they will become slim like the models in all ten advertisements. To teenagers who have already tried any of the hair product and see the advertisement for the hair product than they will feel very depressed that their body is not slim as the models. Also the ten advertisements will change teenagers’ view on how people’s body should look like. Moreover, during the commercial time of a Tamil network television, I saw a commercial. A commercial that portrays a woman who is over weighted and that can’t do anything by herself, the commercial also had some boys in it that made of how she looked in the back of her. All so ever the commercial portrays that over weighted people are always dependant on something and that if you are over weighted you will be easily a victim to be made of. Subsequently, another example of how media portrays “overweight” people is the television show called “The Simpsons”. During all most all the shows of the Simpsons Homer, an over weighted guy is shown as an irresponsible, useless, careless, person. Homer is always there to be made fun of, he never have a proper job. In addition, most of the movies like The Mean Girls, or television shows like Friends have attractive, slim females in them as main charcters. Media is making as think that what we see in the outside as an appearance is what matters, and that the human organ called a heart is just an extra organ that we carry around. With this in mind teenagers should start to be aware that media is fooling them to believe something that is not true and to start using their brain when they are dealing with the media. Teenagers are never aware of the clowning, and exaggeration that is used in the media. In media the female models are portrayed as silly, childish, or dumb while the male models are posed as if they are in control and serious. First, an advertisement for Infusium hair products has a model that is holding an umbrella when it is not even raining one bit. This advertisement portrays the female model as silly to be holding an umbrella when it is not raining. The advertisement makes female teenagers to think that no matter what, nobody will think that they matured. Also the advertisement will make male teenagers to think that all female teenagers are dumb and that the males are in more power and smarter than females.. Similarly, a music video that is also portraying men as dominance, and females as being controlled by men is the music video titled What you gun’ do?. In the music video, women are caged in a strong glass and males are singing and stepping on the cage as if saying that females are a piece of trash for the society. As mentioned the music video portrays males in a lot more power than females, and also that males can do anything to the females and females would not talk. Another advertisement that makes the female model to look dumb is the advertisement for Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer. The model in that advertisement has some words written on her hair. This makes the model’s hair to not look good and the model to look dumb. This advertisement makes the male teenagers to believe that all female models are so desperate to attract the male teenagers. The third advertisement that also uses the clowning and exaggeration in advertising is the Jasmine Herbal Essences. The model in the advertisement is lying on top of beautiful, purple jasmines. This advertisement portrays the model in the advertisement as if she is childish. These kinds of portrayals of females are always used in media, but however the teenagers who are looking at the different forms of media aren’t aware of the portrayals because they are always too busy looking at other stuff in the chosen form of media such as how the models pose. Teenagers should start to question the media because what is portrayed on the advertisements is how media say they should be; so if a model in an advertisement is childish than the teenagers are also childish; but if you want to change that thought of the media than start looking for details in media and start to act against media.
According to Marshall McLuhan’s perspective “We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.” That is how bad we are taken advantage of, not even a person takes advantages of us, but a tool that once humans made. According to Robert Bresson’s point of view “Cinema, radio, television, magazines are a school of inattention: people look without seeing, listen in without hearing.”

The Illusory image technique makes teenagers to believe something that is not true. Bending, canting, and appeasement are when models pose in a way that attracts the opposite sex or any viewers. Clowning and exaggeration is when portraying female models silly, childish and also when portraying male models serious, and powerful. Media influences teenagers negatively by making them believe something that is not true, by controlling teenagers’ thoughts and feelings, by portraying different genders in a certain way that is not actually true about the genders, by making teenagers to go against their religion and against their parents, and altogether by lowering teenagers self-esteem. This is important for teenagers to know because they are the ones that is getting fooled and controlled by media!! This is a priority for teenagers like you and me because media is creating myths and we believe the myths that are being created by them. Media is making all of us a fool. They think that we are brainless or in other words stupid. Media should not be controlling us, we don’t sometimes even allow our parents to control our lives, and how could we allow media? Is media more important than our own beliefs? Of course it is not. Take actions! Act smart! Have more confidence in you!
