Children's book
I am in mom mode. When my kids were little, they both liked one particular book to my chagrin. In my daughter's case, it was a board book called "Betty's Birthday." I finally bought the book when I found it, for $2.99. The book was nothing special but I could no longer borrow it from the library.
My son loved Theodore Tugboat which was closely tied with Thomas the Tank engine. I read those books again and again.
Myself, I loved Harry the Dirty Dog, Curious George and Amelia Bedelia. I laughed when Amelia hung the lightbulbs out to dry and cut all the rosebuds off the sheets.
What was your favourite book as a child and why?
P.S. No pressure but this is a prize question. We will take a random name from all the entries, for this one.

As a child, i loved Robert Munsch books. They were always really funny, and were set up similarly. My sister has the complete series, and sometimes i still read them. My favourites are PURPLE, GREEN, AND YELLOW, and ALLIGATOR BABY.
Jen,
I love the books by Munsch. "Love you forever and Murmel, Murmel, Murmel" were my favourites.
I am sure there will be other Munsch lovers out there.
Another favourite book was "on the day you were born." This book talks about how everyone welcomed you on the day you were born. Yet, another tear jerker.

My son loved Arthur. I loved Arthur. He was an afterschool staple, at our house.
My son's favourite Munsch book was the subway one because my husband used to work in the subway.

My daughter loved the Babysitter's little sister chapter books. They were a great intro into chapter books.
Maybe you did not like the BSC series because the books are very American, in their thinking. Beverly Cleary wrote all kinds of children's books but children could identify with the characters. Perhaps, this is what you were missing from BSC.
Interesting tidbit. When i worked in children's, BSC and bsc little sister were not in as much demand. When i do work the children's desk, the chapter books i am being asked for now are more generic, being good for both boys and girls.
there are still some girl's books like Girls of many lands which are very popular.
One of the most popular series is still Series of Unfortuate Events.
